USDA Montana Hay 03/29 13:15 AMS_2769 Montana Direct Hay Report Released on March 29, 2024 Direct Hay Weighted Average Report for week ending 03/29/2024 VOLUME This Week Last Reported Last Year (03/18/2024) Tons: Hay 4620 660 1975 Straw 100 580 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Total 4620 760 2555 ====================================================================== Compared to last week: Hay sold generally steady on heavy movement this week. Hay sales were much heavier this week as numerous large ranches entered the market. Much of the hay that sold this week was not for immediate use and many ranchers were not willing to take delivery until early to mid summer. Demand for hay remains light, but was more robust compared to previous weeks. Hay supplies of feeder quality hay remain heavy, but increased interest and some buying is giving producers breathing room as summer inches closer. Producers remain willing to carry over hay as snowfall has been light this winter and many still have drought and irrigation water concerns going forward. The best demand for feeder quality (utility and fair) hay remains around $140.00-150.00/ton delivered. Demand for straw is light as heavy straw supplies continue to be seen especially in the northern portion of the state. According to the drought monitor 41.30% of the state is in Moderate drought or worse, up 0.05% from last week. 16.51% of the state is in an Severe drought or worse, up 0.05% from last week. 1.00% of the state is in Extreme drought or worse, unchanged from last week. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- N/A -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hay Conventional -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alfalfa Fair Per Ton Qty Price Range Wtd Freight/ Description Crop Age Avg Use --- ----------- --- ---------- ----------- -------- Large Round 250 120.0-130.0 124 F.O.B.
